2nd grade spelling words — six weeks of ten. Printed from https://vocabularygames.org/spelling-practice/2nd-grade-spelling-words/
About these lists
A second grader already spells short words by sound. The new step is that one sound can be written several ways: the long a in “cake”, “rain” and “day”. These lists take one spelling of a long vowel at a time, so the child meets each way of writing it on its own before the ways are mixed.
The last week adds r-controlled vowels, where the r changes the vowel before it, as in “car” and “fork”.
What trips children up in grade 2
- The silent e is easy to forget because it makes no sound of its own: “hop” for “hope”. Ask your child what job the e is doing.
- ai sits inside a word and ay at the end: “rain” but “day”. The rule holds for every word in this week’s list.
- ee and ea sound the same, so “sea” and “see” must be remembered by meaning, not by sound.
- ow can say two things: “snow” here, “cow” later in third grade.
A week with one list
Sort the words: read the list and let your child group them by the letters that make the long sound.
Write each word, then underline the letters that make the vowel sound.
Print the week’s worksheets; the home test on the last page shows which spellings still wobble.
Worksheets and the game
Under week 1, “Make worksheets from this list” opens the worksheet generator with cake, bake, came and the other 7 words of “long a with a silent e” filled in, ready to print for grade 2: each word read, traced and written four times, then a home test, with a QR code in the corner that opens the same list in Words Tower. “Play in the game” starts a tower from the same week at once, the grade 2 words said aloud at the doors; nothing to install, no ads, and progress stays on your device.
Questions
What spelling patterns are taught in second grade?
Usually the silent e, vowel teams such as ai, ay, ee, ea, oa and ow, r-controlled vowels such as ar and or, and the endings -ing and -ed. These six weeks cover the first three groups.
My child spells “cake” as “cak”. Is that a problem?
No — it shows they hear every sound. The silent e is a rule to learn, not a sound to hear; the first week is all about it.
Should we practise every day?
A few minutes most days works better than one long session. One tower in the game takes about ten minutes.
Is it free?
Yes. The lists, the recordings, the worksheets and the game are free, with no ads and no sign-up; progress stays in the browser on your own device.
Our school sends its own list. Can we use that instead?
Yes. Type it into the worksheet generator to print it, or paste it into the game under Test prep and set the test date. These lists are for the weeks when nothing comes home, or for extra practice.
