About this list
Nouns are the easy half of early reading: they can be drawn, pointed at and acted out, which is why they stick faster than words like «because». This list is the one to reach for when a child needs a win, or when the graded list of the moment has become a slog.
Many of these words have a picture behind them in the game — apple, dog, house, bird — so a child who cannot read the word can still meet it. The rest are read aloud like every other word here.
What trips children up here
- «Christmas» and «Santa Claus» are the only capitalised entries, and «Santa Claus» is two words.
- «men» / «man» and «women» / «woman» are on the list as pairs; the vowel that changes is not the one children expect in «women».
- «eye» is three letters and one sound, and is almost never guessed right.
- «kitty», «robin» and «squirrel» are of their time — worth a word of explanation rather than a correction.
How to work through it
Sort the list into groups with your child — animals, home, weather, people. Sorting is itself the practice.
Use the pictures: ask for the word that matches, then turn it round and ask what the word shows.
Mix ten nouns into the graded list you are working on, so every session has some words that come easily.
The same list, as a game
In Words Tower the word is said aloud and your child walks into the door that carries it, on a tower that turns as they climb. Choose 🔤 Learn to read → Dolch nouns when you pick the words, and the tower is built from this list. A word that was missed comes back sooner; a word that is known comes back rarely. Questions
Are the Dolch nouns part of the 220 sight words?
No. The Dolch sight words are the five graded lists, from Pre-Primer to third grade. The nouns are a separate list of 97 naming words, practised alongside them.
Which of these words have pictures?
The words in the game’s own picture library — everyday things like apple, dog, house, book and bird. Where a picture exists, it is shown above the doors as well as the word being said.
Can I add our own nouns?
Yes, and you can add a picture of your own to each one. Your list stays on your device; pictures are never uploaded.
Do we have to pay for anything?
No. The lists, the recordings and the game are free, there are no ads and no sign-up, and progress stays in the browser on your own device.
Can I print this list?
Yes. Print the page and you get the list on paper, without the buttons and without the rest of the site — one sheet to put on the fridge or hand out in class.
