About this list
The second grade list is the one where spelling starts to matter as much as reading. Children can usually recognise these words on a page long before they can write them, and the gap between the two is where most of the school’s spelling tests live.

What trips children up here
- «their» and «there» sound identical and mean nothing like each other — the pair children get wrong longest.
- «read» is said two ways. The recording says «reed», the present tense.
- «don’t» is the first word on the Dolch lists with an apostrophe.
- «write» has a silent w, and «which» and «wish» differ by a letter in the middle.
- «would» joins could and should from the first grade list.
How to work through it
For their / there, practise whole sentences rather than single words: the meaning is what tells them apart.
Say the word, then ask for it written — recognising it is no longer enough at this level.
Before a school test, put the teacher’s own list into the game with the test date, and let the practice arrange itself around it.

How do I explain their and there?
By use, not by rule: «their» always belongs to someone, «there» is a place or the start of a sentence. Practise them in sentences and let the recordings show that both sound the same.
Can the game test spelling, not just reading?
Yes. When a word is familiar, the three doors show it spelt three ways — the right way and two believable mistakes — and only the right door opens.
